TDSB Alternative Schools

The TDSB offers 22 alternative schools at the secondary level. Each school is a close-knit, highly engaged, diverse community that offers a fresh and unique approach to learning.

Alternative schools are places where students find their way through learning environments that vary widely and often include self-directed projects, experiential learning, business and entrepreneurial mentorship programs, strong co-op programs and credit recovery opportunities - all while earning OSSD credits.

Here you may find extraordinary art and word galleries, classrooms with comfy couches, and teachers mentoring their students. These are schools where students need a new way - to find their way. And they do.

2018-2019 Elementary Guidance Program

Dear Students/Parents/Guardians:

Welcome back to another year of learning with your child!  This year the TDSB focus will be centered on equity, well-being, and student achievement.  Knowing our Students, Engaging our Students, Listening to our Students and Learning from our Students will play a pivotal role in the Guidance Program.  We will work hard to inspire students, connect with their passions and assist them to dream about their future. (Unleashing Learning: A Vision For Learning in TDSB

One of the goals of the guidance program is that every grade 8 student and family will be equipped with the knowledge and information to make an informed and confident decision for choosing an appropriate secondary school program.  This is a process that requires a partnership between the student, parents/guardians, teachers, guidance counsellor and our secondary school representatives.  This partnership will help ensure that our students will have every opportunity for success as they transition to secondary school.  This process will help students become more independent learners.  They will acquire the basic habits and skills they will need for lifelong learning and for success both at school and in other areas of their lives.

Guidance will support schools in implementing this program for students in grades 7& 8 utilizing the My Blueprint Program along with other specific classroom activities. Please visit the resource section in our Blog below for further information and resources.  Please contact your guidance counsellor if you have any questions or concerns.

We look forward to working with you and your child to ensure that he/she has a positive experience as they transition to secondary school.  If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Guidance Counsellor at their elementary school.  You are also encouraged to visit this website on a regular basis for the  most up to date information.

“Choices for Nine” invitations will be arriving to the Elementary schools soon. At this important meeting for families, we will be taking a deeper look at the grade 8 to 9 transition process and timelines.

Watch Promoting Mental Health: Finding a Shared Language -- a six minute video to create a better understanding about mental health and well-being

Follow these tips every day to promote your child’s physical health and mental well-being

ü  Try to get 10 or more hours of sleep.
ü  Keep your child’s bedtime about the same time every night and on weekends.
ü  Create a bedtime routine with your child.
ü  Practice deep breathing together to help relax before bedtime.
ü  Encourage your child to be active during the day.
ü  Limit the time children spend on the TV, computer (outside of school work), electronic games and other screens. Aim for 2 hours or less of screen time
ü  Turn off the TV when no one is watching.
ü  Keep TVs, video games and computers out of your child’s bedroom. The light and sound from screens prevents children from sleeping.
ü  Spend free time being active as a family by going for walks, biking or visiting a nearby playground.
ü  Keep a bag of play and sports equipment to bring outside.
ü  Have games, puzzles, crafts and books ready when children are looking for activities
ü  Eat meals together as a family with the TV turned off; encourage everyone to talk about his/her day.
ü  Eat meals or snacks together as often as you can. Children are more likely to try foods when they see adults enjoying them.
ü  Avoid food and drinks that have caffeine (colas, chocolate, tea, coffee).
ü  Have vegetables and/or fruit with meals and snacks.
ü  Avoid giving your child snacks high in sugar, fat and salt.
ü  Keep fruit in a bowl on the table and cut vegetables in the fridge so that they are ready to eat.
ü  Try a new vegetable every week; ask children to help pick it out. It could take 10 or more times before children taste and accept a new food, so keep trying!
